SES Launches New Rugged Processor For Fighting Vehicles : 25/8/2009

Specialist Electronics Services Ltd (SES) launches new rugged processor for fighting vehicles

August 2009, Camberley, UK - Specialist Electronics Services Ltd (SES), a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged data recorders, data processors, recording media and data reconstruction software, announces its new S3DP-V rugged processor designed for use in military land vehicles.

Incorporating design features focussed on monitoring and processing applications in land vehicles, the S3DP-V draws on years of rugged digital processor experience gained from other products in the family, in particular the S3DP-F+ airborne rugged processor.

S3DP-V features an Intel Atom processor chip running at 1.1 or 1.6 GHz, up to 1GB of RAM, and two each of Giga-Ethernet, USB2.0, CANBus and asynchronous serial interfaces. Power and all interface connections are made using screw fit military circular connectors, but for convenience in development of software applications, Ethernet and USB2 connections can also be made using familiar commercial RJ45 and USB push-in connectors. S3DP-V includes on board mass storage up to 32 GB, completing a powerful general-purpose processing capability.

Optionally, a three-axis on board accelerometer can be fitted internally to monitor the usage environment and generate motion-activated interrupts with user selectable levels. An optional on board GPS and Gallileo module offers exceptional 50-channel performance. The GPS aerial is connected through one of the circular military connectors. Neither option reduces the interfaces available to the user.

The S3DP-V can be mounted in inaccessible locations, thanks to an option which allows the on-board solid state memory to be accessed as a simple USB device from a USBv2.0 host controller. In this mode, data can be downloaded from, or uploaded to the S3DP-V memory with the unit unpowered all necessary power being supplied though the USBv2.0 host controller. This makes for easier maintenance, and ensures that software update or data download is a simple in-situ operation.

"We expect most users will develop applications for Windows XP or XPe," comments SES Managing Director Mark Mabin, "but LINUX Ubuntu and Gentoo operating systems are also supported, as well as the Real Time Operating System (RTOS) OnTime and a VX Works Board Support Package is in the pipeline. The on-board accelerometer and GPS options are really valuable in the HUMS and DefStan 25-24 applications for which the S3DP-V is an ideal solution."

The solid-state design of S3DP-V leads to an excellent resistance to vibration and shock (to Mil-Std 810F) and to operating temperatures between -40°C and +80°C. The processor runs from 24V vehicle battery, and is fully protected against high voltage transients and reverse polarity connection, meeting the exacting vehicle power requirements of Mil-Std 1275D and DefStan 61-5. The unit withstands temporary full immersion in water up to 1m deep, conforming to Mil-Std 810F, equivalent to IP67.

First deliveries of S3DP-V are scheduled for November 2009.
